Can your boss legally swear at you? page header

Can your boss legally swear at you?

Can your boss legally swear at you?  Yes, as there is no law prohibiting foul language at work. If your employer has a policy against it, then you can report the manager to human resources, but don’t expect much of a response.  If you have a code of conduct for your company, you can use that as a basis for your complaint. Many companies have a zero-tolerance policy, but again do not expect your company to do anything about it.

If your boss uses foul language to target you because of your race, sex, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or because you filed a previous complaint, then the swearing or foul language will be seen as a target offense because of the above employee-protected traits.
